  • 14 oz firm tofu, pressed and drained
  • 1/2 cup breadcrumbs
  • 1/4 cup nutritional yeast
  • 2 tbsp soy sauce
  • 1 tbsp sesame oil
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 tsp onion powder
  • 1/2 tsp smoked paprika
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1/4 tsp black pepper
  • 4 whole grain burger buns
  • 4 slices vegan cheese
  • 1 cup lettuce, shredded
  • 1 tomato, sliced
  • 1/2 red onion, sliced
  • Ketchup and mustard, for serving

Instructions

Follow these steps for perfect results

  1. In a mixing bowl, crumble the pressed tofu with your hands until it resembles the texture of ground meat.
  2. Add the breadcrumbs, nutritional yeast, soy sauce, sesame oil, garlic powder, onion powder, smoked paprika, salt, and black pepper to the tofu. Mix until well combined.
  3. Shape the mixture into four patties, making sure they hold together well. You can refrigerate the patties for 15 minutes to help them firm up.
  4. Heat a non-stick skillet or grill over medium heat. Cook the patties for about 5-7 minutes on each side, or until golden brown and crispy.
  5. In the last minute of cooking, place a slice of vegan cheese on each patty and cover to allow it to melt.
  6. Toast the whole grain burger buns on the grill or in the skillet until golden.
