- 14 oz firm tofu, pressed and drained
- 1/2 cup breadcrumbs
- 1/4 cup nutritional yeast
- 2 tbsp soy sauce
- 1 tbsp sesame oil
- 1 tsp garlic powder
- 1 tsp onion powder
- 1/2 tsp smoked paprika
- 1/4 tsp salt
- 1/4 tsp black pepper
- 4 whole grain burger buns
- 4 slices vegan cheese
- 1 cup lettuce, shredded
- 1 tomato, sliced
- 1/2 red onion, sliced
- Ketchup and mustard, for serving
Instructions
Follow these steps for perfect results
- In a mixing bowl, crumble the pressed tofu with your hands until it resembles the texture of ground meat.
- Add the breadcrumbs, nutritional yeast, soy sauce, sesame oil, garlic powder, onion powder, smoked paprika, salt, and black pepper to the tofu. Mix until well combined.
- Shape the mixture into four patties, making sure they hold together well. You can refrigerate the patties for 15 minutes to help them firm up.
- Heat a non-stick skillet or grill over medium heat. Cook the patties for about 5-7 minutes on each side, or until golden brown and crispy.
- In the last minute of cooking, place a slice of vegan cheese on each patty and cover to allow it to melt.
- Toast the whole grain burger buns on the grill or in the skillet until golden.
- Assemble the burgers by placing each tofu patty on the bottom half of the bun. Top with lettuce, tomato, red onion, and your favorite condiments.
